The OTC naproxen sodium label includes temporary relief of toothache among its uses. “Temporary” is the important boundary. A pain reliever cannot show whether the tooth has inflamed pulp, a crack, decay, an abscess, gum disease, or another condition, and it cannot perform the procedure needed to treat that source.

The current OTC label warns about severe stomach bleeding and increased risk of heart attack, heart failure, and stroke. It also flags anticoagulants, steroids, diuretics, aspirin used for heart attack or stroke prevention, and other medicines.

A dentist may need imaging and treatment such as drainage, root canal care, restoration, or extraction depending on the diagnosis. Temporary relief after naproxen does not establish that the source has healed.
